Yoga during menstruation
Traditionally, women are instructed nor to practise Astanga yoga while they are menstruating. Although it is easy to dismiss this as outdated, it does make sense on both a physical and an energetic level to rest at this time. Inverted postures. such as headstand and shoulder stand, and semi-inverted postures. such as down-facing dog are to be avoided because they cause blood to flow back toward the uterus instead of out of the body. On a general level, the heating nature of Astanga yoga  is said to be incompatible with menstruation.
Many yoga teachers believe that adapting a yoga practice to the menstrual cycle results in a reduction in menstrual problems. such as premenstrual syndrome and painful periods. They recommend eating menstruation as a time to withdraw and contemplate.Take a few rest days and try practising some gentle, open and passive postures. such as Badhha Konsana A (see page 92). during menstruation- Many women feel naturally inclined toward a softer and more introverted yoga practice during menstruation anyway. You may find yourself able to meditate easily at this time.
